Stitching and Sharing Culture: Molas from Panama's Guna People

Stitching and Sharing Culture: Molas from Panama's Guna People

The International Quilt Museum’s exhibition, “Stitching and Sharing Culture: Molas from Panama’s Guna People” will feature complex textiles that share the rich imagery, both indigenous and cross-cultural, that Guna women have long incorporated into their stitched handiwork. The exhibition is being curated by University of Nebraska-Lincoln students in Anthropology 292: Special Topics, with help from students from Saitama University (Saitama, Japan), who will participate in a two-week internship at the IQM in early September. The students are working under the guidance of UNL Global Studies Professor Emira Ibrahimpasic and IQM Curator of International Collections Marin Hanson.

An opening reception for “Stitching and Sharing Culture: Molas from Panama’s Guna People” will be held on September 15 from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m., with the students giving brief presentations at 5:00. The International Quilt Museum is pleased to hold this event in conjunction with Lincoln’s citywide celebration of Welcoming Week, a worldwide annual celebration that invites communities of all sizes to celebrate inclusive societies and deepen their commitment to creating places that are welcoming to everyone, including immigrants and refugees.
