Anne Burton

Anne Burton

Anne Burton is a printmaker whose work has often addressed the subjects of feminism and identity. However, the experience of her son contracting a rare bacterial infection sent her work in a new direction. To cope with and understand what was happening, Burton began a series of reduction woodcut prints into which she worked out her fears and illustrated her crash course in the biology of bacteria and the medical interventions, including two surgeries, her son received. Her prints also have an underlying geometry drawn from mapping quilts in the International Quilt Museum collection. The result is a fascinating series of prints that brings together her roles as an artist and mother into a cathartic visual narrative.
