Alice Hedderich appliquéd blue stars to honor soldiers from Madison Township, Indiana, who served in World War I. The gold stars commemorate the soldiers who fought and died. She also added red crosses, probably to represent Red Cross nurses who served in the war.

Her quilt serves as a visual honor roll of the local men and women who served in the war.

Alice married Leander J. Hedderich—an auto dealer, salesman and machinist—on July 25, 1896, in Tippecanoe, Indiana. They had two children, William “Willie” and Mattie.

This quilt appeared in our 2015 exhibition “Covering the War: Quilts on the Home-Front."
