Nine Patch Variation

Maker Unidentified

As we settle into the groove of a new year, we are taking a moment to look back in this edition of Quilt of the Month.

Featuring a variety of calicos and muslin fabrics, this quilt is a fantastic example of mid-19 century patchwork. More that 10,000 pieces and 360 blocks have been carefully placed and hand stitched to create a medallion arrangement spanning more than seven feet. Each block is made of small diamonds, squares, rectangles and triangles.

This quilt is part of the original collection of nearly 1000 quilts from Ardis and Robert James that helped establish the International Quilt Museum in 1997. A year later, this quilt was chosen as part of 88 quilts to be shown during the World Quilts '98 Expo in Japan at the Tokyo International Forum. The four-day event welcomed nearly 100,000 visitors.
