Juneteenth Reflections: The Power of Identity with Kwame Gyamfi

On June 19 at 5 p.m., join the International Quilt Museum for a presentation from educator, coach and author Kwame Gyamfi! Learn about Gyamfi’s education and coaching career, his life experiences, his involvement with the Malone Community Center, and his perspectives on Juneteenth.
 
After the presentation, we will be joined in the galleries by artist Celeste Butler who will talk about her quilt "Ancestors" that will be on display as part of "Material Nation: 250 Years of American Quiltmaking."

ABOUT KWAME GYAMFI: Kwame Gyamfi has served in public education for 19 years, working with public and private schools since 2007. Throughout his career, he has held many roles, including campus supervisor, high school football coach, African American Caucus sponsor, Equity, Inclusion and Diversity facilitator, and Student Advocate. In 2021, he helped write the African Studies curriculum for Lincoln High School.

Kwame has nearly two decades of experience coaching football at the youth, high school, and college levels. In his current role on the Malone Center Leadership Team, he serves as the School Community Coordinator, also known as the “After School Principal,” running the Community Learning Center at Lincoln Northeast High School. He also reviews legislation and its potential impact on the community.

Kwame creates quality programming focused on civic engagement through STEAM, mentorship, and social-emotional learning for a diverse group of students. He is the creator of the Human Connection Strategies program at Civic Nebraska and the student-driven Future Harvest program at Northeast High School. He currently serves as Co-Chair of the Lincoln Memorial Day Committee and is a recent Citizens University Fellow.

In addition to his work in education and community leadership, Kwame is an award-winning writer, African historian, public speaker, artist, and business owner. His current book, "Prism of Perspectives: The Life and Names of Kwame Gyamfi," is available on all platforms.
 
ABOUT CELESTE BUTLER: Celeste Butler is an Omaha-based textile artist with an affinity for quilting and storytelling. Her work has been featured in the Washington Post, We Don’t Coast and Omaha Inspired Living. She has led workshops at the National African American Quilt Convention in Lawrence, Kansas, and taught at Metropolitan Community College in Omaha.
